  • Alcohol consumption can play a role in causing depression; the irony of this is that many people drink alcohol in an effort to alleviate their low mood. The higher the amount of alcohol that is consumed, the greater the number of symptoms of depression. However, symptoms of depression have been reported to decrease dramatically or disappear completely alcohol abstinence.
  • When you look at the various blood alcohol concentration levels, physical alcohol abuse effects include: Loss of Muscle Control - When the person reaches a .10 blood alcohol concentration level, their speech will begin to sound slurred. Judgment issues and poor coordination will be present, which can lead to falls and/or accidents.
  • Bedtime alcohol consumption among older persons may lead to unsteadiness if walking is attempted at night, increasing the risk of falls and injuries.
  • In adults 50 years and older, alcohol was the most frequently reported primary substance of abuse for all treatment admissions. Of these, 76% were 65 and older.
