- What is alcohol abuse? Alcohol abuse is a health issue. It is characterized by a maladaptive pattern of drinking alcohol that results in negative work, medical, legal, educational, and/or social effects on a person's life. The individual who abuses this substance tends to continue to use it despite such consequences.
- Although college students commonly binge drink, 70% of binge drinking episodes involve adults age 26 years and older.
- Alcoholism can be a way to deal with stress, anxiety and other feelings; many alcoholics tend to develop certain drinking rituals, which can be a part of what sets the stage for an alcohol addiction; an example of this is having a drink every night before or after dinner.
- While some of the most current research suggests that small amounts of alcohol may have beneficial cardiovascular effects, there is widespread agreement that heavier drinking may lead to serious health problems.
