Chronic heavy drinking appears to activate the enzyme CYP2E1, which has been reported to be responsible for transforming the over-the-counter pain reliever into chemicals that can cause liver damage, even when this over-the-counter medication is taken in standard therapeutic doses.
When a pregnant woman consumes alcohol, it passes through the placenta to the growing fetus. Because a developing baby's body breaks down alcohol much more slowly than an adult's, a fetus's blood alcohol level can rise much higher than its mother's and stay elevated longer.
