After an episode of heavy drinking, as the alcohol begins to wear off, a small withdrawal syndrome can take place; symptoms of this syndrome can include stomach upset, early morning awakening (a type of insomnia), headache, and electrolyte imbalance, which often makes people feel sick.
Critical signs of alcohol poisoning can include when a person cannot be roused, vomiting, seizures, slow breathing, irregular breathing (more than 10 seconds between breaths), hypothermia, stupor or coma.
7.5% of Americans employed in full-time jobs report heavy drinking, defined as drinking five or more drinks per occasion on five or more days in the past 30 days; 6.6% of part-timers and 10.8% of unemployed workers also report heavy drinking; across all three categories, heavy drinkers are most likely to be found in the 18 to 25 year old age group.
The physical symptoms of alcohol dependence include an overwhelming compulsion to drink, the inability to stop or control one's drinking, and the need to drink larger amounts of alcohol in order to get the same effect, which is referred to as developing a tolerance.
