Excessive alcohol use has immediate effects that increase the risk of many harmful health conditions. These immediate effects are most often the result of binge drinking and include the following: Miscarriage and stillbirth among pregnant women, and a combination of physical and mental birth defects among children that last throughout life.
In 2008, there were approximately 190,000 emergency rooms visits by persons under age 21 for injuries and other conditions linked to alcohol.
In 1984, when federal law changed the drinking age to 21, more than half of fatal crashes among drivers aged 15 to 20 were alcohol related. By 1994, after the new law had been in effect, that number had dropped to 22 percent.
Studies show that adolescent and young adult drinkers are particularly likely to drink alcohol heavily with the intention of getting drunk�''often every time they drink.
