Alcohol use by persons under age 21 years is a major public health problem. Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United States, more than tobacco and illicit drugs.
Brain scan studies suggest that the brain anatomy of an alcoholic begins to return to normal within six months of abstinence; however, cognitive function has not always been reported to return when the brain scans appear normal.
A recent study compared the brain scans of teens who consume alcohol heavily with the scans of teens that don't. The study found damaged nerve tissue in the brains of the teens that drank.
