According to the Task Force of the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, a variety of prevention strategies have been implemented by colleges across the U.S. in an effort to reduce high-risk drinking and its consequences on college campuses, including programs that target freshmen, athletes, sorority and fraternity members, and students that violate college alcohol policies.
National monitoring systems are needed to be able to keep track of alcohol consumption and its consequences throughout the United States, in order to raise awareness and enable debate amongst the public and the policy-makers in the White House.
The negative health effects of long term alcoholism include fatty liver and cirrhosis, cardiomyopathy (breakdown of heart muscle), brain shrinkage and cell death (particularly memory areas), ulceration, and inflammation of the pancreas.
Long-term alcohol consumption can cause cardiological problems, including elevated blood pressure and heart rate, risk of stroke and heart failure.
